New Source Filmmaker error?

When I try to start it, it just dies immediately. No error message, no crashing when I try to load a model. I've tried deleting models, reinstalling, verifying the cache...

I'm not sure entirely sure what you're saying here. Are you saying it crashes when it launches? How can you load models when it crashes on launch? Or does it crash when you load a map? In any case, might want to try and delete the Steam cloud data for SFM. You can also try to add the -condebug command to your Source Filmmaker launch options. This will create a file console.log in you usermod folder. I don't know if the file is created if the app crashes or not, but it is worth a try.

It crashes immediately upon launching. It doesn't let me get in to do anything.

Update: I've tried verifying the game cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, removing the latest models I added, going back to a previous version... Nothing seems to work.

In addition to uninstalling, you might want to try removing SFM's entries from the registry before re-installing.

I'll give it a try. Do you have any advice on how to get started with that?

Just as I said, remove every entry of Source Filmmaker from your registry. It should be stated however, if you're not familiar with how the registry works or have never done it before, then I wouldn't recommend it. If you delete something important by accident, it can really mess up your computer. Best read up on it or check out some youtube videos on it.

Hoo hoo boy, this is going to be fun. Thank you very much for the help though.

I've seen this happen before and my quick fix was to revert it to a previous version ( which won't change much since the last update was for saxxy submissions) that can be done by going to SFM's properties in steam - beta tab - previous version.

I've tried that, I've tried carefully going into the Windows Registry and deleting the references in there, I've tried a complete reinstall. NOTHING works.

You'll have to provide more details if you want help troubleshooting. Are you launching from a shortcut on your desktop or directly from Steam? Can you describe exactly what happens when you try to launch SFM? Does it lock up or crash to desktop? At what point does it crash? Do you even see the Source Filmmaker loading screen? After crashing, do you see still see SFM listed as a running process in the task manager?

I launch it directly from Steam, and I do see it running for a little while in the task list as 'sfm.exe 32', which goes away after a minute or two. What happens is this: the Steam window that says 'launching SFM' comes up for a second with the Windows loading icon, then it disappears and absolutely nothing. No changes on my screen at all Steam says I'm in SFM and it won't let me launch anything else while it futzes about. No loading screens, nothing.

What kind of hardware are you running?

Brother Antroz

Intel Core i5 3330, DDR3 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560, MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1, Motherboard Dell inc model 084J0R. The main harddrive is 906 GB, the second 456 GB. I've updated the drivers just in case, but no luck

Do you have any trouble launching any other Source games? Have you uninstalled SFM using this method: http://steamcommunity.com/app/1840/discussions/0/864957912725555377/ followed by removal of all references in the registry? You should do this now either way and see if it launches.

I have no trouble running any other game I own (from BioShock Infinite to TF2), and I've done both of those steps before. It didn't change anything then, but I'll give it another try just in case.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted the registry and the .blob file. It still dies, same way as before.

Did you also uninstall Steam? Otherwise, the nuclear option: reinstall Windows. You can try contacting Valve, but they're pretty mute about pretty much everything.

Brother Antroz

I uninstalled Steam earlier, but doing that to Windows seems like way too much trouble for what seems like a problem on Valve's end...

The crash dumps in the SFM folder get sent to them, but they get hundreds of those on a daily basis so many problems don't get solved.

Thanks for the help; I guess I'll just wait a couple months until they can spare the manpower to look at the code...

When cleaning out the registry, you're searching for both "SFM" and "Filmmaker" yes? Have you tried the Valve support forums? You'll probably have better luck there than asking us pervs on a porn site. If all else fails, you'll have to bite the bullet and re-install your OS.

The tutorial I found said the entries were just called 'source filmmaker'. And yeah, I posted in both SFM forums.

What about the SDK, does the SFM SDK work for you?
Wed, 04 Dec 2013 03:35:04

Brother Antroz

The SDK does, for some damn reason.

So apparently it was a piece of sneaky malware that evaded all my anti-virus software, and was so sneaky that it was trying to modify SFM crashlogs. A Valve employee got back to me and helped me locate the problem, and it works like a charm. (Also, I've been kind of misrepresenting things. The situation was just as I described, but the person affected was Marm or Mike576. I have no idea why I made it about me instead, but I apologize.)
