Creating face flexes in SFM, How?

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 20:29:28

I have spent the last week trying to fugure out how to create face flexes using Blender (never done anything remotly close to this before and I have spent at least 2-3 hours a day trying to figure this out. One can only bash there head on the desk so much). Ganonmaster was kind enough to port the model for me but I'm stuffed if I can work out how to create all the nessassary flexes. If someone out there would be willing to write up a tutorial for dummies i would be greatfull. All the face bones are there it would just make it eaiser to work with using the flex sliders. M.Tron

You can't simply turn the face bones into flex sliders. The technology doesn't work that way. This has to be done manually. For every flex slider you want, you basically need to create a "morph target" (also known as "shape key"). You take the base model for the head, make a copy of that model, and change the shape to fit your desired expression (for example raised eyebrow), and then add the modified model to the original mesh as a shape key. (if that makes sense) Here's a basic workflow: [list=1:rca4u15k] [*:rca4u15k]Import your model into Blender, 3ds Max or Maya[/*:m:rca4u15k] [*:rca4u15k]Create the shape keys/morph targets. These are the individual facial expressions/flexes/deformations of the model. (this is the most difficult/time consuming part)[/*:m:rca4u15k] [*:rca4u15k]Export your shape keys/morph targets as VTA[/*:m:rca4u15k] [*:rca4u15k]Add the flex controllers to your QC file[/*:m:rca4u15k] [*:rca4u15k]Compile the model and open in SFM[/*:m:rca4u15k][/list:o:rca4u15k] Information on how to create basic shake keys/morph targets in Blender can be found here. Information on how to create the shape keys/morph targets in 3ds Max can be found here and here. Information on how to setup the flex controllers in your QC file can be found here. I'm not that good at explaining the technical aspects, so if anyone wants to chime in, please do.
